Evaluation of Mechanical and Tribological behavior of Aluminum Alloy LM13 Reinforced with Titanium Dioxide Metal Matrix Composites
Highlights of the Present Study

The highlight of the present study is to fabricate Aluminum based particulate reinforced MMCs with 2 weight percentage of reinforcement content. The fabrication of composites has been done through liquid metallurgy route via stir casting technique.
For the present studies Al LM13 is selected as matrix materials and TiO₂ particulates were selected as reinforcement materials. The extent of incorporation of reinforcement material in the matrix alloy was varied 2wt%.
Cylinders of cast composites were obtained. The test samples were prepared as per ASTM standards for different tests planned. The cast alloy and composites were subjected EDX, XRD, and SEM Studies,
XRD, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy images were used to study Al LM13-TiO₂developed composites before & after the fracture and wear tests.
The cast alloy and composites were subjected to evaluation of different properties such as Physical, Mechanical (Hardness, Strength, fracture and percentage elongation studies), and Wear Resistant properties.
The wear tests were conducted using Pin-on-Disc wear testing machine in which cast alloys and composites are used as pin specimen which is under sliding contact with EN31 steel disc counter face material under different test conditions.
The dry wear test results indicate that, the Al LM13-TiO₂MMCs offered higher wear resistance than that of matrix alloy. Increased loads and sliding distances in wear test resulted in higher wear loss.
Additionally, TiO₂ particulates contributed significantly in enlightening Al LM13-TiO₂MMCs wear resistance upto 1wt%.
From the overall investigations and findings, it may be concluded that Al LM13-1wt% TiO₂ exhibits significantly improved physical, mechanical, and tribological properties in comparison with the other Al LM13-1wt% TiO₂MMCs considered in the present study.
